Teaching & Learning Philosophy

My image of the child starts with my belief that all children are capable of learning and that we must identify their method of learning. Individualization of children allows supportive needs to be met and from there we can identify and provide accommodations that best suit those needs. How does Learning Happens states that this viewpoint of knowing that children are capable of development creates a better program not only for the children but for their families as well (OMed, 2014, pg.16). One way to reflect this in the classroom by affirming the student verbally telling them how capable they are. I have an understanding that some children are susceptible to neglect or abuse and this limits their experience within a center or school therefore as an educator I want to take these sections of their lives into account when curating curriculum or individual learning plans. To best accomplish this in the classroom I would like to project this image through visual aids such as posters, books or other forms of media that can be shared throughout the environment. I want to be of service to children, youth and their families supporting all of them regardless of my own experiences and biases. I aspire to be an advocate for these children considering innovative ways to disable systemic barriers and continuously learning about ways there are barriers to learning. CMEC supports the notion in their Early Learning and Development Framework (2020) that inclusivity within the learning environment helps empower children in learning and fosters the growth of dignity, self-esteem and community involvement. My belief is that the experiences of children’s families and what occurs in their communities should be considered in the learning environment. We must notice the intersectionality and provide support, learn about and consider what those are. This fosters trust amongst families, communities and educators that can help build a relationship that is effective for learning. A way to practice this in the classroom is through candid conversations with parents. Those quick convos at the entrance door can make a huge difference in relationships and trust building but maintaining communication is a great way to provide support to parents and their children.   My view of the environment is that within any learning environment, there shouldn’t be any barriers that limit the child, family or community from participating in learning therefore it should be inclusive. I aim to set goals of creatively composing play activities within a classroom that can encourage imagination, risky play and critical thinking skills. I also aim to support families by providing playful experiences they can do at home. My views of the child, families/communities, environment and myself as the educator have placed me in a position to be an advocate for change within the school system. I am someone who values inclusivity, play-learning-based activities, and fair access to resources. All of these contribute to better opportunities for children to encounter and sustain them for a life-long learning experience. I am an educator who not only wants to impact the child but also their families and the communities that host and shape these individuals. I have goals to rally within organizations that align with my values and to propose the creation of new initiatives that combat issues that persist in affecting these children. I know that I have a long way to go in my career but I look forward to the challenges, creating alliances and learning along the way. .
